Do You Make Friends Easily?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Do You Make Friends Easily?

Salka is always interested in making friends. Even though he’s large and looks like a wolf, kids are drawn to him. He actually assumes that everyone likes him.

Once when we were in a sporting goods store, we ran into a father with two daughters. One of the girls came running over to see Salka, and they interacted. The other daughter, who was perhaps 7 or 8 years old, was clearly scared of him. Her father said she had been bitten several years before. Because of that incident, she was afraid of dogs, and they had decided not to get a puppy even though the younger daughter clearly wanted one.

After getting her fathers permission to talk with her, I was able to do some rapid trauma resolution. I then challenged her idea that because one dog bit her in the past, all dogs are biters. I was able to get Salka to be calm and relax and lie down. (He could sense her unease.) Within a few minutes she was able to pet him. When I looked at her father, his eyes were tearing with emotion. He thanked me and, of course, Salka.

Like Salka, your attitude towards others will determine your relationships. If you believe you are going to be liked and can connect with people, you will.

Have you experienced this belief in action? Please share your stories and comments below.

(In these pictures Salka and a few new friends are taking advantage of a temporary river in Tucson. Normally a dry wash, it can fill up within hours. At this time, it had receded about seven or eight feet from just a day and a half before. Within three or four days, it was dry again.)

Are You Connecting at a Human Level?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Are You Connecting at a Human Level?

Because of its relevance to our Patient Success Systems business, Beth, John and I recently attended a presentation by Rachel Naomi Remen, a physician who has written a wonderful book, Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories That Heal, about the role of doctors being human, or as she says, “tapping into your humanness as a way to facilitate healing in your patients.”

Rachel has chosen storytelling as a way to illustrate the importance of human connection. She is a gifted storyteller who speaks from her heart, and it is clear she comes from a long line of storytellers. Some of her most poignant stories were those about her grandfather and the stories he told her.

During her presentation she articulated the discomfort she experienced as a young doctor when she began emphasizing her humanness in order to connect with patients, this was often seen as unprofessional. It was actually her own experience as a patient recovering from debilitating surgery that allowed her to understand the role of true connection in healing. Her story contrasted the experience between being treated as an illness and being treated as a person.

Her premise is that we can be truly impacted by a moment of human connection because that connection creates a space for healing. In her own case she had been very depressed following her surgery—a depression that her providers failed to recognize. By chance, a woman who assisted her with a medical device was the first person in the hospital to create a meaningful human connection with her. As a result of this connection, Rachel decided that she could, in fact, not only recover but also live fully. The sweet irony of this story is that the woman who made this connection with Rachel may not realize how powerful and meaningful that connection turned out to be. It is not uncommon that the people who make theses connections are surprised to find meaningful theses experiences were.

The main message that Rachel conveyed is the importance of bringing your humanness—who you are—to whatever you do. What ultimately can happen as a result of doing this is that we ourselves recognize that we are enough—what we are in the world is exactly right. This butts up against the idea or belief that we are not enough.

What was wonderful about this experience for me is that her ideas reinforced what I already believe. It was germane to the work and training that Beth, John and I bring to the medical community. But I realize, however, that our communication skills training will not work very well without the underlying beliefs about human connecting. Without this belief, the training is just a set of skills or tools. It is the intent to connect at the basic human level that makes such a profound difference. To summarize it the way that Rachel did, physicians are trained to be technicians, so they take an objective viewpoint utilizing the tools or interventions appropriate for the illness or injury rather than recognizing that they are working with a human being. Yet, it is often the connection at a human level that allows healing to take place.

Are you truly connecting with your clients? I am interested in hearing your stories about connecting with others or being “connected with.” What happened as a result? Please share your comments and experiences below.

Did You Know?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Did You Know?

Those of you who are still getting to know me may not realize that I grew up in La Oroya, a multinational mining town in Peru. Here are a few other tidbits about me and my time in Peru.

  • I have spent a lot of time riding horseback there. Thats Bonita, my first horse, in the photo. I used to ride every day.  One of the things that riding taught me was the importance of attending to your environment and staying in communication with your horse. That certainly applies to developing rapport.
  • When I was 19 I had a summer job in the mountains of southern Peru. It took six hours to get there via dirt roads and 4-wheel drive, and not surprisinglythere were very few amenities. It was amazing to spend time in such a remote area.  That job required that I work with a diverse group of people and be very flexible in relating to others. If you didn’t treat people well, they would not work for you or with you.
  • I have studied with and served as a translator for a Peruvian shaman.  What I learned from him has had an impact on my entire life. His ability to be in harmony with nature was profound and allowed him to work with people and their issues in miraculous ways. He had the ability to work with all kinds of people and issues. As I write this I am reminded of how my early life and experiences guide so much of what I do today. I am a big fan for suggesting that we have as many “out of the box” experiences as we can.
  • The most memorable view I’ve ever seen was in Peru, at Machu Picchu. I was there at 7 a.m. on my birthday one year. There was a light mist and rainbows, and it was spectacular.  It is one of the places in the world that I think affects people on the spiritual level. It certainly did for me.

How has your life been affected by your early experiences? What experiences could you have in the future that might open your world view?

An Appeal from Salka

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on An Appeal from Salka

This is a bit off-topic from my usual posts, but it’s important to me and Salka.

As you can see in this photo, Salka is perfectly comfortable in the lobby of a dog-friendly hotel. In fact, he often goes with me to several dog-friendly businesses. Due to changes in corporate policy, unfortunately, he is no longer welcome at some of the places we used to go. As a result, I may stop going to those places, and I know the same is true for others with companions like Salka.

Salka understands that the policies may have changed because some of his brethren are not well behaved. Nevertheless, he encourages pack leaders say something to these businesses, because there are many of us who make choices based upon such policies. In fact, Salka and I have already stopped going to a couple of banks specifically because of these policy changes.

If you are a pack leader with pull, please do what you can to encourage businesses to adopt or maintain dog-friendly policies as appropriate for their clientele. Salka and I appreciate your efforts.

Are there any experiences you’d like to share regarding a dog-friendly business?

Rubbing Elbows with the Rich and Famous

At last! After spending the better part of a week traveling, I was finally able to successfully download my pictures from the recent Secret Millionaire party at James Malinchaks house in Las Vegas. This is one of my favorites, featuring (from left to right) James, myself and Robin Leach, who served as the MC for the event.

Is It Time to Work or Play (or Sleep)?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Is It Time to Work or Play (or Sleep)?

Like all dogs, Salka has sleep time, eating time and playtime. His energy level is at its highest early in the morning, and he makes the most of that.

We all have a time when we do things better. Take a cue from him and discover what your rhythm is for certain things. If you work best at 3:00 in the morning, don’t “weird out” about it. Work with it!

Meet Terry, Part 2

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Meet Terry, Part 2

For those of you who would like to know more about me, this is the continuation of last week’s post.

Did You Know…

1. That my son Phil is a musician in Berlin, Germany? He’s performing at a wedding in the photo below.

2. That my sister, Kathy, is head of the Peace Corps’ Spanish language program in Peru? She’s on the right in the photo below, with my dogs and her husband Leo. I’m on the left with granddaughter Gabriel.

3. That I love soccer. I play in a 45+ league now, and I used to serve as a color commentator for professional indoor soccer. That was a great opportunity for me to combine two passions: soccer and communication. I did this twice before the Spanish-language station, Telemundo, and the team, Arizona Sandsharks, were sold. As if commentating weren’t fun enough, I also got to do some warm-ups and passing drills with the team!

Meet Terry, Part 1

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Meet Terry, Part 1

Someone recently pointed out that I’ve shared more personal information in my newsletter than on this blog or website. I’ve taken the hint and decided to include some new pictures as well as clips from the “Did You Know?” and “Travels with Terry” sections of my ezine, Belief Change Alchemy. If you haven’t already, I invite you to subscribe to that now.

My wife Beth Haggerty and I live in Tucson, Arizona. In addition to Salka, whom you’ve already met, we are happy to share our lives with Munai (left) and Waiki (center).

As I mentioned earlier this month, one of my goals is to travel on all of the major rivers of the world. I’ve been on ten so far, including the Amazon (left), Rhine (middle) and Russian River (in Alaska, right).

What Will YOU Do When You Reach Your Goals?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on What Will YOU Do When You Reach Your Goals?

What a weekend! I just returned from Las Vegas, where I celebrated James Malinchak’s appearance on ABC’s Secret Millionaire.

Malinchak hosted a party that began with a webcast of the program Sunday afternoon and continued with the full television broadcast that night. He limited his guest list to 100 people, excluding celebrities. One notable attendee was Robin Leach, former host of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. James had arranged for him to serve as the MC.

What I saw at James’s party was a wonderful example of how somebody can marry money with a high-level mission. For those who have been able to create this kind of income, it speaks to their ability to have a tremendous impact at a high level. It’s also representative of what you can do when you reach your goals.

I attended this event with my good friend and fellow coach, Larry LaPrade. It was an incredible networking opportunity, and we both made the most of it.

Speaking of networking, I’m attending the Infusionsoft User Conference (2011 InfusionCon) in Phoenix this week, where James Malinchak and Brain Tracy are both delivering keynote addresses. I’m working in the area as well, spending some valuable face-to-face time with a few of my Phoenix clients. If you’re nearby and want to hook up, give me a call (520.237.4435) to see if we can work something out.

Do You Need to Address an Internal Conflict?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Do You Need to Address an Internal Conflict?

Recently in doing work with coaches who are deciding where they want to be in their business or in their earnings, I have come across similar struggles they are having precisely because they are pushing themselves.

When you as a coach move to higher levels of success, you often run into questions and challenges that force you to consider what is really important to you about your work.

Sometimes these questions and inner struggles occur because coaches aren’t certain they want to continue modeling themselves after the successful mentors they have been following up to this point. They wonder if
they should do things differently.

In order to advance to another level and be congruent, coaches must determine what’s right for them. Until you resolve these issues, you cannot reach and maintain a higher level of success.

It’s not about your mentors or role models being right or wrong—it’s about what’s right for you.

The sticky part of this process is determining which of the following reasons is the cause of your dilemma: a limiting belief about higher-level success or a conflict of values—a concern about doing something that’s not in harmony with who you are. Either way, you must be willing to take on the struggle in order to move beyond it.

Today, I’m going to focus on the latter issue: honoring your own values.

There are a myriad of extremely successful, high-level coaches in our field with an equally wide-ranging number of approaches. Some can be controversial. Some may have enviable results but use techniques you’d rather
not employ. Some you may have emulated until just recently, but now you question whether their methods are right for you.

Keep in mind that these can be matters of perception. They may involve situations that are not strictly black and white. What some successful coaches may consider to be appropriate and necessary business decisions might also—thought perfectly legal—go against your values.

Whether your concerns are related to rates, style, presentation, content, value or something else entirely, you need to address them and determine what works for you. Integrity is self-defined. Remember, it’s not about your mentors or role models being right or wrong—it’s about what’s right for you.

Again, determine if your challenge is about congruence and values or about beliefs and stepping up in a different way. For some it may be both. Once you identify what is bothering you, start to address the issues one at a time.

The learning point comes when you step up or attempt to act at a higher level, for there can be a reaction. You may experience a “parts split” that will show up as an internal struggle such as, “Part of me wants this, and another part of me wants that.” Treat this as an important opportunity to discover what is really important to you.
