Are You Using the Right Words to Facilitate Quick, Successful Breakthroughs?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Are You Using the Right Words to Facilitate Quick, Successful Breakthroughs?

I recently served as the Guest Expert during an interview with Daria Boissonnas, who provides training and guidance for conscious leaders through her Global Institute for Awakening.

Our topic was Enhancing Healing and Consciousness with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

I’m happy to tell you that a FREE recording of that interview is now available.

Download the MP3, and you’ll hear live demonstrations about which specific words and questions can heighten natural healing and success for your clients.

Just click this link for access to the interview:

Enhancing Healing and Consciousness with Neuro-Linguistic Programming

While listening, you’ll also hear about a foundational component of NLP: discovering how people represent their reality through pictures, self-talk and sensations.

Understanding a client’s “map of the world” allows you to make interventions tailored to that client and to get rapid breakthroughs.

Do you understand your clients’ maps?

Are you using the right words to facilitate quick, successful breakthroughs for them?

If not, what could—and should—you be doing differently?

Try taking advantage of the information in this recording, and let me know how it works for you!

Setting Your Own Pace (and Sometimes Adapting to Another’s Pace)

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Setting Your Own Pace (and Sometimes Adapting to Another’s Pace)

Salka’s notes are actually from Waiki this time.

She can’t keep up these days and has no interest in doing so. She has her own pace and is not interested in adapting to the other dogs. They have different demands. Waiki’s agenda is to go out and be in the neighborhood. Despite her failing health, she’s really happy and enjoying herself.

The added bonus is that accommodating her needs allows me to get a brisk, heart-healthy walk with the other two dogs and then take it easy with her. It reminds me of raising children. With kids, we often have to adapt to their styles rather than having them adapt to ours, and doing so pays dividends for everyone.

Are You Using the Language of Success?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Are You Using the Language of Success?

One of the skill sets we taught physical therapists in Alaska involves using pre-suppositional language in a very specific way. The pattern that appealed to them most was one in which you presuppose an outcome.

For example, if you’re working with someone to reach a specific goal, one way to help them achieve it is to ask questions like this…

When you’re operating in a healthy way, what do you imagine you’ll be doing on a daily basis?”

OR

While operating in a healthy fashion, what do you imagine you’ll be doing on a daily basis?”

In the first case, the when presupposes what follows, and in the second, while serves as the word that presupposes what will follow.

It can be helpful to recognize that this pattern can be used to presuppose failure as well. It’s what you put the focus on, positive or negative, that determines the outcome. One of the things that can be helpful is to notice if your clients are already using this language pattern themselves. If so, are they using it to presuppose failure?

To adopt language for successful outcome, coaches could say…

After practicing this pattern, what do you think will be different?”

OR

Once you’ve done this, what will be different?”

Both examples presuppose that the action will have happened. Notice that these questions orient people to the future, creating an already-accomplished experience because of the presupposed success.

Overall, I have found that presupposing success or achievement is very helpful to people.

Breaking It Down to Beat Overwhelm

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Breaking It Down to Beat Overwhelm

I had a follow-up call with a former client today, and within the first few minutes he began describing a sense of being overwhelmed. It became clear to me that he had linked together a number of experiences so that when he thought of any one of them, he immediately pictured all of them and became overwhelmed.

I asked if I could offer some suggestions, and he consented. I told him to take the list he had made of everything he needed to do and use a pair of scissors to cut the list apart.

I wanted him to create distance between the items by separating them and positioning them on the floor away from each other. I mentioned that this might help him breathe better—given that his breathing had become irregular when he started describing his sense of overwhelm. As he laid the pieces of the list on the floor, he calmed down and said, “Oh, some of these really are separate.” He then added, “Now I can see what needs to be done first.” And he breathed easily.

Like many people, this person had a visual representation of what was overwhelming him—a bunch of things swirling around together in his mind, even though they didn’t necessarily go together. This exemplifies how every problem has a structure that keeps it in place.

It’s important to help people break their problems down into smaller components so that they can address them individually. I don’t tell people how to organize their issues or prioritize their problems, but I do help them chunk issues down into more manageable pieces.

Are your issues—or those of some of your clients—really as unmanageable as they seem?

Are You a Leader that Others Want to Follow?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Are You a Leader that Others Want to Follow?

How do you become a leader that others want to follow? This is the topic of this month’s download. Learning how to nurture your inner leader is particularly useful if you know you need to step into leadership roles.

Most of you are aware of the importance of leadership. It’s a continuous topic on the news and TV news shows. Why? Because we understand the importance of having strong, compelling leaders. What is not as clear is what constitutes a “leader” or how exactly you can become a leader that others want to follow.

Becoming the Leader that Others Want to Follow will take you through a process of learning how to tap into your leadership abilities and more effectively utilize them. You have been leading yourself for a long time. What this means is that you cannot not lead.

This month’s recording will give you an opportunity to explore and, where appropriate, improve your natural leadership. You may be questioning whether or not you want to lead, but since you are still reading this post, you are interested in learning. When you learn about your unique leadership style, you can then apply it to learning to lead and inspire others.

Imagine that you could step forward in a powerful, congruent way so that you can share your passion or message with others so they will be inspired.

Are you ready to lead?

Do You Avoid Those Who Are Different from You?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Do You Avoid Those Who Are Different from You?

Salka met Ellie, a rescued Chihuahua, at a friend’s house on our trip through California two summers ago. As you can see, Ellie is about the size of Salka’s head. Though she hid from him during their early encounters, they are now best friends.

Do you avoid potential friendships or connections because someone is very different from you? Hopefully your potential friends don’t have to worry that your bite is something they need to be concerned about.

Do You Have an Energizing Mission?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Do You Have an Energizing Mission?

According to studies of people who have survived “incurable” cancers, they had two things in common at the time they were battling the disease. First, they believed that their treatment—whatever it was—would work. Second, they experienced a re-mission; their illnesses didn’t disappear, but they took on something larger than themselves, a new mission. They dedicated themselves to a new life’s work. For some it was a charity, for others a friend or family member, but in all cases, they took on something they felt was more important than themselves.

Waiki, our chow chow, is currently struggling with cancer. Since becoming sick, she has been less focused on our other dogs and more focused on us. She is now dedicated to her relationship with Beth and me. Waiki depends on us in ways she didn’t or wouldn’t before, even allowing me to pick her up and put her in the car. She embodies trust.

Waiki’s health was deteriorating when I left for Las Vegas at the end of July, and it got worse upon my departure. When I cut my trip short and returned home, however, she improved. Something about me coming home allowed her a recovery or remission of sorts. Her tumor stopped bleeding; she starting eating on her own; and she began walking much better. Since that time she no longer is affected by her tumor, and even though she struggles to get up from the floor, she is always up for her daily walk.

Beliefs can have that effect. They are powerful. To help clients who are struggling with an illness, try to connect them with an important mission. Assist them in finding a higher purpose, and it might make a difference. The flipside of this is exemplified in retirement. Those who feel like they lost their identity and purpose upon retirement may have a hard time enjoying it.

People who have a mission they really identify with rarely struggle with motivation. Rather than trying to address motivation on a behavioral level, look at the reasons for doing what you’re doing. Establishing or reconnecting with a purpose reduces the issue of motivation. When there is a strongly held mission, things like behaviors, motivation and identity are more likely to fall into place.

Do You Make Friends Easily?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Do You Make Friends Easily?

Salka is always interested in making friends. Even though he’s large and looks like a wolf, kids are drawn to him. He actually assumes that everyone likes him.

Once when we were in a sporting goods store, we ran into a father with two daughters. One of the girls came running over to see Salka, and they interacted. The other daughter, who was perhaps 7 or 8 years old, was clearly scared of him. Her father said she had been bitten several years before. Because of that incident, she was afraid of dogs, and they had decided not to get a puppy even though the younger daughter clearly wanted one.

After getting her fathers permission to talk with her, I was able to do some rapid trauma resolution. I then challenged her idea that because one dog bit her in the past, all dogs are biters. I was able to get Salka to be calm and relax and lie down. (He could sense her unease.) Within a few minutes she was able to pet him. When I looked at her father, his eyes were tearing with emotion. He thanked me and, of course, Salka.

Like Salka, your attitude towards others will determine your relationships. If you believe you are going to be liked and can connect with people, you will.

Have you experienced this belief in action? Please share your stories and comments below.

(In these pictures Salka and a few new friends are taking advantage of a temporary river in Tucson. Normally a dry wash, it can fill up within hours. At this time, it had receded about seven or eight feet from just a day and a half before. Within three or four days, it was dry again.)

Are You Connecting at a Human Level?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Are You Connecting at a Human Level?

Because of its relevance to our Patient Success Systems business, Beth, John and I recently attended a presentation by Rachel Naomi Remen, a physician who has written a wonderful book, Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories That Heal, about the role of doctors being human, or as she says, “tapping into your humanness as a way to facilitate healing in your patients.”

Rachel has chosen storytelling as a way to illustrate the importance of human connection. She is a gifted storyteller who speaks from her heart, and it is clear she comes from a long line of storytellers. Some of her most poignant stories were those about her grandfather and the stories he told her.

During her presentation she articulated the discomfort she experienced as a young doctor when she began emphasizing her humanness in order to connect with patients, this was often seen as unprofessional. It was actually her own experience as a patient recovering from debilitating surgery that allowed her to understand the role of true connection in healing. Her story contrasted the experience between being treated as an illness and being treated as a person.

Her premise is that we can be truly impacted by a moment of human connection because that connection creates a space for healing. In her own case she had been very depressed following her surgery—a depression that her providers failed to recognize. By chance, a woman who assisted her with a medical device was the first person in the hospital to create a meaningful human connection with her. As a result of this connection, Rachel decided that she could, in fact, not only recover but also live fully. The sweet irony of this story is that the woman who made this connection with Rachel may not realize how powerful and meaningful that connection turned out to be. It is not uncommon that the people who make theses connections are surprised to find meaningful theses experiences were.

The main message that Rachel conveyed is the importance of bringing your humanness—who you are—to whatever you do. What ultimately can happen as a result of doing this is that we ourselves recognize that we are enough—what we are in the world is exactly right. This butts up against the idea or belief that we are not enough.

What was wonderful about this experience for me is that her ideas reinforced what I already believe. It was germane to the work and training that Beth, John and I bring to the medical community. But I realize, however, that our communication skills training will not work very well without the underlying beliefs about human connecting. Without this belief, the training is just a set of skills or tools. It is the intent to connect at the basic human level that makes such a profound difference. To summarize it the way that Rachel did, physicians are trained to be technicians, so they take an objective viewpoint utilizing the tools or interventions appropriate for the illness or injury rather than recognizing that they are working with a human being. Yet, it is often the connection at a human level that allows healing to take place.

Are you truly connecting with your clients? I am interested in hearing your stories about connecting with others or being “connected with.” What happened as a result? Please share your comments and experiences below.

Did You Know?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Did You Know?

Those of you who are still getting to know me may not realize that I grew up in La Oroya, a multinational mining town in Peru. Here are a few other tidbits about me and my time in Peru.

  • I have spent a lot of time riding horseback there. Thats Bonita, my first horse, in the photo. I used to ride every day.  One of the things that riding taught me was the importance of attending to your environment and staying in communication with your horse. That certainly applies to developing rapport.
  • When I was 19 I had a summer job in the mountains of southern Peru. It took six hours to get there via dirt roads and 4-wheel drive, and not surprisinglythere were very few amenities. It was amazing to spend time in such a remote area.  That job required that I work with a diverse group of people and be very flexible in relating to others. If you didn’t treat people well, they would not work for you or with you.
  • I have studied with and served as a translator for a Peruvian shaman.  What I learned from him has had an impact on my entire life. His ability to be in harmony with nature was profound and allowed him to work with people and their issues in miraculous ways. He had the ability to work with all kinds of people and issues. As I write this I am reminded of how my early life and experiences guide so much of what I do today. I am a big fan for suggesting that we have as many “out of the box” experiences as we can.
  • The most memorable view I’ve ever seen was in Peru, at Machu Picchu. I was there at 7 a.m. on my birthday one year. There was a light mist and rainbows, and it was spectacular.  It is one of the places in the world that I think affects people on the spiritual level. It certainly did for me.

How has your life been affected by your early experiences? What experiences could you have in the future that might open your world view?
