Destiny Alignment: Powerfully Express Who You Are

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Destiny Alignment: Powerfully Express Who You Are

As I mentioned above, it can be difficult to know when you are expressing or fully engaging your true self. I would like to help you connect with and operate from your true self because it will allow you to be more congruent and, as a result, have a greater impact.

You’ve probably heard people say things like “I wasn’t being myself” or “That’s not really who I am” or some other statement that implies there is another self, a false self or an unreal self. What is it about this statement that makes intrinsic sense? I propose it’s the idea that we have a true self that is somehow known to us.

When you start thinking of the idea of your true self, it may be better to think about your true selves, because we actually create several selves. What is useful is recognizing which self serves you in pursuit of your values. It is important to find what is enjoyable, interesting, pleasing, etc. Having a sense of self makes it possible to have a self-concept.

Developing a self-concept that is true to what is important to you is what effectively supports you in achieving your goals.

I have been particularly interested in this theme because it often emerges when I am coaching. Many of my clients have discovered that as children or young people they took on or adopted a self that someone else wanted for them, rather than allowing who they were to truly emerge. Would it surprise you to understand or discover that sometimes people play small so that others around them can be more comfortable and relaxed?

One way to understand the phenomenon of a clear self-concept is to recognize that when you are congruent with who you truly are, you move through the world with a great deal of clarity and power.

I want you to discover your true self and purpose so that you can be doing the kind of work that truly fits you and lets you feel good about yourself. People who don’t think well of themselves usually don’t attempt very much, and if they don’t attempt very much, they won’t accomplish much. So being able to identify who you truly are in different contexts will allow you to congruently take action, letting you be more productive and do things you enjoy more—rather than what you think you should do.

The process of discovering who you truly are can take some effort. I believe it is best done with guidance and support. I suspect, however, that you have already had some clues about being on the right path of discovery. Are there certain activities that just seem right? Are there ones that make your heart sing when you are doing them? Are there some that just feel right to your gut? If so, that is the feedback that you are on the right path. If you have not yet had that experience, then you owe it to yourself to discover your true calling and destiny.

I would love to hear what you think about this. Please share your feedback and comments below.

Have You Been There?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Have You Been There?

As mentioned before, I have a personal quest to travel on as many of the worlds major rivers as possible. Ive been fortunate to experience the splendor of some incredible waterways already, including this glacial river of ice in Alaska. Beth and I even spent time kayaking in that state last summer.

Have you been to Alaska yet? If you want to go there someday, have you made plans to make it happen? If you have a different travel goal, what are you doing to bring it to fruition?

Meet Terry, Part 2

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Meet Terry, Part 2

For those of you who would like to know more about me, this is the continuation of last week’s post.

Did You Know…

1. That my son Phil is a musician in Berlin, Germany? He’s performing at a wedding in the photo below.

2. That my sister, Kathy, is head of the Peace Corps’ Spanish language program in Peru? She’s on the right in the photo below, with my dogs and her husband Leo. I’m on the left with granddaughter Gabriel.

3. That I love soccer. I play in a 45+ league now, and I used to serve as a color commentator for professional indoor soccer. That was a great opportunity for me to combine two passions: soccer and communication. I did this twice before the Spanish-language station, Telemundo, and the team, Arizona Sandsharks, were sold. As if commentating weren’t fun enough, I also got to do some warm-ups and passing drills with the team!

Meet Terry, Part 1

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Meet Terry, Part 1

Someone recently pointed out that I’ve shared more personal information in my newsletter than on this blog or website. I’ve taken the hint and decided to include some new pictures as well as clips from the “Did You Know?” and “Travels with Terry” sections of my ezine, Belief Change Alchemy. If you haven’t already, I invite you to subscribe to that now.

My wife Beth Haggerty and I live in Tucson, Arizona. In addition to Salka, whom you’ve already met, we are happy to share our lives with Munai (left) and Waiki (center).

As I mentioned earlier this month, one of my goals is to travel on all of the major rivers of the world. I’ve been on ten so far, including the Amazon (left), Rhine (middle) and Russian River (in Alaska, right).

What Will YOU Do When You Reach Your Goals?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on What Will YOU Do When You Reach Your Goals?

What a weekend! I just returned from Las Vegas, where I celebrated James Malinchak’s appearance on ABC’s Secret Millionaire.

Malinchak hosted a party that began with a webcast of the program Sunday afternoon and continued with the full television broadcast that night. He limited his guest list to 100 people, excluding celebrities. One notable attendee was Robin Leach, former host of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. James had arranged for him to serve as the MC.

What I saw at James’s party was a wonderful example of how somebody can marry money with a high-level mission. For those who have been able to create this kind of income, it speaks to their ability to have a tremendous impact at a high level. It’s also representative of what you can do when you reach your goals.

I attended this event with my good friend and fellow coach, Larry LaPrade. It was an incredible networking opportunity, and we both made the most of it.

Speaking of networking, I’m attending the Infusionsoft User Conference (2011 InfusionCon) in Phoenix this week, where James Malinchak and Brain Tracy are both delivering keynote addresses. I’m working in the area as well, spending some valuable face-to-face time with a few of my Phoenix clients. If you’re nearby and want to hook up, give me a call (520.237.4435) to see if we can work something out.

What Do You Want?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on What Do You Want?

In my last post I described how the process of visualizing what you want can be a powerful motivator. Indeed, effective change is easier when you have a clear sense of what you want. When you can clearly state exactly what you desire, then your unconscious mind is more likely to “get it.”

In order to facilitate this, you should to spend a lot of time visualizing what you want, feeling and experiencing it in your mind’s eye. Doing this allows your unconscious mind to organize your thoughts and behavior in ways that will help you get what you want.

When you do exercises like these, it’s important to focus on what you want, not what you don’t want. Only visualize representations of what you truly would like.

When I utilize hypnosis with clients, I often use this process first. I find that by helping them clearly describe their goals and desires prior to hypnosis, their unconscious minds will be more receptive to suggestion while under hypnosis. They will then be more open to the reaffirming suggestions I make during hypnosis.

For example, if someone says that he or she wants to be engaged in learning on a more regular basis, then that person should talk about wanting to learn. In hypnosis, you can then suggest ways to make learning possible and to assist the client in being open to learning, saying things like, “When you leave here, you may discover that you learn more easily than before. You’ll realize how important learning is to you, and you may discover even more ways of learning.”

In this particular example, what’s important about the process is that learning has taken on new meaning. In the grander scheme, this exercise is about framing your mindset. You have to determine what you consider to be important so your mind will know how to go about the process of supporting that goal in just the right way.

Note: One of my goals is to travel on all of the major rivers of the world, and I’ve been on ten so far. The waterfall pictured was one of the many spectacular views I enjoyed while traveling along the Manú River in Peru. Have you visualized your travel goals?

Are You Living Your Dreams?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Are You Living Your Dreams?

Thierry Henry photo courtesy Wikipedia

While Beth and I were at a professional soccer game last Saturday night featuring the New York Red Bulls and Sporting Kansas City, we noticed that the Red Bulls’ featured player (star) was Thierry Henry. We then realized that it was exactly 10 years ago to the day that Beth and I saw him play in London when he was new to Arsenal Soccer.

We got to meet Thierry back then because we were working for Tony Adams, who was the captain of the team at that time. We had been hired to set up an addiction clinic for professional athletes, which also included a peak performance aspect. As part of working for Tony, we went to several Arsenal games and sat in his box. Afterwards we were invited to the post-game party in the club. It was there that we met Thierry.

Working in London for Tony Adams was a dream job, not only because I love soccer—and still play—but also because I had the chance to work for one of the world’s best soccer stars.

I truly believe that experience was the result of setting two different goals: one to work internationally and another to work with professional athletes. I just didn’t know that I would get to do both at once.

What important dreams are you setting in place? Do you have the beliefs to support those dreams? Search your memory and see if you have had an experience like mine—one that was the result of setting a big goal and then going for it.

Start the New Year with a Shorter To-Do List

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Start the New Year with a Shorter To-Do List

If you read my last blog, then you’ve probably been thinking about the energy drains in your life. Now that you’ve identified them, what are you going to do about them?

To get your year off to a good start, you need to tackle your energy drains NOW.

Starting with the “immediate” stuff right away, take care of those things that are niggling at your awareness. Consciously be aware of each so you can take care of it. If it’s a commitment to someone else, honor it right away. If it’s a commitment to yourself, honor it right away or renegotiate with the awareness that now you are only going to commit to those things you can and will do. This leads to the next step.

Think of something that you’ve completed or accomplished. How does that feel? Much better, right? As you deal with your drainers, finishing some tasks and letting go of others, you should experience a sense of relief with each accomplishment. Recognize the sense of completion and relief that comes with removing each energy drain.

Now, examine your beliefs that 1) everything has to be done and 2) that it has to be done perfectly. In order to work through existing energy drains and prevent new ones, you will have to let go of some things. Recognize what you’ve been taking on that you many not actually have to do. You can let go of some tasks because they didn’t really have to be done to begin with. Isn’t it a relief to start the new year with less on your to-do list!

Finally, do what it takes to prevent additional energy drains.

Make sure that you don’t continue to contribute to the problem. The more commitments you have hanging out there that you can’t get done, the worse it’s going to get. Keep in mind the old business saying: “Success is as much about knowing what to say ‘no’ to as what to say ‘yes’ to.” Know your priorities, and use them to determine when to say “yes” and when to say “no.” Consider every request for a commitment carefully, even seemingly trivial ones, because a commitment means that you are striking a contract with yourself or others for future action.

Once you successfully eliminate some of the energy drains in your life, let me know. I’d love to hear about it!

Are Energy Drains Sucking the Life Out of You?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Are Energy Drains Sucking the Life Out of You?

In my last post I described how my wife and I improved our office environment by removing clutter, reorganizing and repainting. The clutter was an energy drain, and addressing it made a big difference for both of us.

Identifying and removing energy drains is important to your business, your relationships and your health. Energy drains are the things in your life and environment that feel as if they are sucking the life out of you. Take a minute to think about something that has been on your to-do list for ages. How do you feel when you think about it? See, that is an energy drain!

Such drainers, or leaks, include the following:

  • projects you’ve intended to tackle but haven’t,
  • things you’ve been meaning to do but haven’t,
  • cards you’ve meant to send,
  • people you’ve planned to call, and
  • commitments you’ve made but not completed,

Energy drains also include environmental and digital reminders of any of these things, such as clutter on your desk, stacks of paper to be filed, or an incomprehensible number of messages in your e-mail program.

As you’ve experienced already, just thinking about the leaks in your life can weigh you down. Dealing with several on a regular basis can be overwhelming. Seeing physical reminders of drainers in your home or office is also exhausting, and the outcome is costly.

Energy leaks can affect your ability to provide good services and to relate fully to those you care about. They can ultimately influence the way you think about yourself and lead to poor productivity or negative self-judgment. For example, as business professionals, we understand that it’s important to do what you say you’re going to do. What does it mean if you have so much going on that you don’t do the things you’ve promised? With energy drains, there’s a cost personally and professionally.

The first step to eliminating them is identifying them. For each sphere of your life, consider your commitments and to-do lists as well as the cluttered areas, literally and figuratively. Identify the problem areas so you can address each one individually.

How many energy drains can you identify in your life?

What are you going to do about them?

Does Your Environment Support Your Goals?

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Does Your Environment Support Your Goals?

To wrap up 2010, my wife and I made some changes in our office because it wasn’t supporting our purpose and mission. In order to work more effectively and efficiently, we cleared out a lot of clutter and moved several things around.

Getting rid of the clutter made a big difference. It was having a negative impact, and we have both felt a sense of relief from removing it. We also painted one room to create a color scheme that’s in harmony with a more positive environment. All of these changes have made a real difference for both of us.

Does your office environment really support what you do? What about your home environment? If not, what are you going to do about it?
