A Tough Lesson Learned
Posted by: | CommentsYesterday I presented a training teleclass on Words That Heal: Language Patterns That Get Clients Unstuck Fast. I had planned carefully for the presentation, making sure that I didn’t get too ambitious or try to give out too much information.
Because the people who called in were willing to be interactive and participate in the training experiences, a good deal of learning took place. Towards the end of the class, I described how to get additional information from specific books and NLP training classes.
I also offered an opportunity to attend my Belief Breakthrough Method™ Coaches’ Intensive Program in Chicago on June 25-26. My wife had helped me create a script for the class, which I followed until the very end, when I lost track of where I was and left out some important information.
How do I know this? Because I listened to the recording. Now I will have to send out e-mails to clarify my offerings and bonus.
If you listen to the audio (click to download Words That Heal recording), you can learn from my mistake. Create a script specifically for your offerings and bonuses. Listen to your recording afterwards and discover what you liked about it and where you can improve.
About an hour after the call, someone called me and invested in the training. So I really encourage you to go for it and stretch yourself, because there is no failure, only feedback.
So what difficult lessons have you learned lately?

A Time to Walk and a Time to Nap
Posted by: | CommentsSalka’s message this week is that he likes predictability and order in his life. When things get out of order, he’s not always sure how to respond. A lot of times you can create a sense of safety and predictability if there’s order and routine in your life: food time, play time, bed time, etc. When that routine is interrupted, he and his pack mates get out of sorts.
Know your rhythm and adapt accordingly.

Would You Like to Get Better Information from Your Clients?
Posted by: | CommentsEveryone, no one, always, never… these are modal operators of necessity.
Using this universal language and these kinds of patterns can keep people stuck because, linguistically, they are removing opportunities to see exceptions or counter examples.
When you hear someone using such patterns, you want to challenge them. Be careful, though. The manner in which you phrase your questions depends upon your relationship with each person.
You’ll say the same thing in all cases, but your tone will be different for those you know well. For example, if you have a good relationship with someone and they say, “Everyone in my class ignores me,” or “My coworkers always think I’m wrong,” you can ask, “Everyone?” or “Always?” in an exaggerated tone. This will usually stop them in their tracks, and they’ll say something like, “Well, not everyone,” or “Not always.” Then you can probe for more specifics.
Again, using an incredulous tone requires that you have a good relationship. If you don’t know someone well, using this approach can sound patronizing or demeaning. For those with whom you aren’t as familiar, you can—instead—carefully repeat, “Everyone” and then gently ask, “Who, specifically?”
Such a discussion might continue like this…
Client: “All the students in the high school.”
Coach: All of the students? (Emphasize “All” for people you know well.)
Client: “Well, the ones in my classes.”
You’ll begin to move from a large picture without exceptions to specific examples you can work on.
When people hear themselves using these language patterns, they begin to realize how they’ve created their worldview. You can help them redo their map. Here’s another example.
Client: “No one appreciates me.”
Coach: “You mean out of all the people in the world, no one has appreciated what you’ve done?”
Client: “Well, my father never appreciated what I did.”
Coach: “Never?”
This exercise can be a rapid challenge to how people maintain their experience. After doing this a couple of times, I’ve had clients tell me that they can hear my voice when they use one of these words.
This is also a way to get more specific information when you’re talking to someone. It even works with corporate clients, as with this example.
“Customers always take advantage of us.”
With your prompting, this becomes… “Well, some customers take advantage of us when they return products.
Which then reveals… “Well, we’ve had a few problems with some of our products.”
Moving away from universal language and modal operators of necessity can help you narrow a problem down to the real issue. It can give you and the client a much better understanding of what’s going on.

Are You Using the Right Words to Facilitate Quick, Successful Breakthroughs?
Posted by: | CommentsI recently served as the Guest Expert during an interview with Daria Boissonnas, who provides training and guidance for conscious leaders through her Global Institute for Awakening.
Our topic was Enhancing Healing and Consciousness with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).
I’m happy to tell you that a FREE recording of that interview is now available.
Download the MP3, and you’ll hear live demonstrations about which specific words and questions can heighten natural healing and success for your clients.

Enhancing Healing and Consciousness with Neuro-Linguistic Programming
While listening, you’ll also hear about a foundational component of NLP: discovering how people represent their reality through pictures, self-talk and sensations.
Understanding a client’s “map of the world” allows you to make interventions tailored to that client and to get rapid breakthroughs.
Do you understand your clients’ maps?
Are you using the right words to facilitate quick, successful breakthroughs for them?
If not, what could—and should—you be doing differently?
Try taking advantage of the information in this recording, and let me know how it works for you!

Are You a Leader that Others Want to Follow?
Posted by: | CommentsHow do you become a leader that others want to follow? This is the topic of this month’s download. Learning how to nurture your inner leader is particularly useful if you know you need to step into leadership roles.
Most of you are aware of the importance of leadership. It’s a continuous topic on the news and TV news shows. Why? Because we understand the importance of having strong, compelling leaders. What is not as clear is what constitutes a “leader” or how exactly you can become a leader that others want to follow.
Becoming the Leader that Others Want to Follow will take you through a process of learning how to tap into your leadership abilities and more effectively utilize them. You have been leading yourself for a long time. What this means is that you cannot not lead.
This month’s recording will give you an opportunity to explore and, where appropriate, improve your natural leadership. You may be questioning whether or not you want to lead, but since you are still reading this post, you are interested in learning. When you learn about your unique leadership style, you can then apply it to learning to lead and inspire others.
Imagine that you could step forward in a powerful, congruent way so that you can share your passion or message with others so they will be inspired.
Are you ready to lead?

Do You Avoid Those Who Are Different from You?
Posted by: | CommentsSalka met Ellie, a rescued Chihuahua, at a friend’s house on our trip through California two summers ago. As you can see, Ellie is about the size of Salka’s head. Though she hid from him during their early encounters, they are now best friends.
Do you avoid potential friendships or connections because someone is very different from you? Hopefully your potential friends don’t have to worry that your bite is something they need to be concerned about.

Do You Have an Energizing Mission?
Posted by: | CommentsAccording to studies of people who have survived “incurable” cancers, they had two things in common at the time they were battling the disease. First, they believed that their treatment—whatever it was—would work. Second, they experienced a re-mission; their illnesses didn’t disappear, but they took on something larger than themselves, a new mission. They dedicated themselves to a new life’s work. For some it was a charity, for others a friend or family member, but in all cases, they took on something they felt was more important than themselves.
Waiki, our chow chow, is currently struggling with cancer. Since becoming sick, she has been less focused on our other dogs and more focused on us. She is now dedicated to her relationship with Beth and me. Waiki depends on us in ways she didn’t or wouldn’t before, even allowing me to pick her up and put her in the car. She embodies trust.
Waiki’s health was deteriorating when I left for Las Vegas at the end of July, and it got worse upon my departure. When I cut my trip short and returned home, however, she improved. Something about me coming home allowed her a recovery or remission of sorts. Her tumor stopped bleeding; she starting eating on her own; and she began walking much better. Since that time she no longer is affected by her tumor, and even though she struggles to get up from the floor, she is always up for her daily walk.
Beliefs can have that effect. They are powerful. To help clients who are struggling with an illness, try to connect them with an important mission. Assist them in finding a higher purpose, and it might make a difference. The flipside of this is exemplified in retirement. Those who feel like they lost their identity and purpose upon retirement may have a hard time enjoying it.
People who have a mission they really identify with rarely struggle with motivation. Rather than trying to address motivation on a behavioral level, look at the reasons for doing what you’re doing. Establishing or reconnecting with a purpose reduces the issue of motivation. When there is a strongly held mission, things like behaviors, motivation and identity are more likely to fall into place.
