Have You Been There?
Posted by: | CommentsAs mentioned before, I have a personal quest to travel on as many of the worlds major rivers as possible. Ive been fortunate to experience the splendor of some incredible waterways already, including this glacial river of ice in Alaska. Beth and I even spent time kayaking in that state last summer.
Have you been to Alaska yet? If you want to go there someday, have you made plans to make it happen? If you have a different travel goal, what are you doing to bring it to fruition?

A Time to Walk and a Time to Nap
Posted by: | CommentsSalka’s message this week is that he likes predictability and order in his life. When things get out of order, he’s not always sure how to respond. A lot of times you can create a sense of safety and predictability if there’s order and routine in your life: food time, play time, bed time, etc. When that routine is interrupted, he and his pack mates get out of sorts.
Know your rhythm and adapt accordingly.

Did You Know?
Posted by: | CommentsThose of you who are still getting to know me may not realize that I grew up in La Oroya, a multinational mining town in Peru. Here are a few other tidbits about me and my time in Peru.
- I have spent a lot of time riding horseback there. Thats Bonita, my first horse, in the photo. I used to ride every day. One of the things that riding taught me was the importance of attending to your environment and staying in communication with your horse. That certainly applies to developing rapport.
- When I was 19 I had a summer job in the mountains of southern Peru. It took six hours to get there via dirt roads and 4-wheel drive, and not surprisinglythere were very few amenities. It was amazing to spend time in such a remote area. That job required that I work with a diverse group of people and be very flexible in relating to others. If you didn’t treat people well, they would not work for you or with you.
- I have studied with and served as a translator for a Peruvian shaman. What I learned from him has had an impact on my entire life. His ability to be in harmony with nature was profound and allowed him to work with people and their issues in miraculous ways. He had the ability to work with all kinds of people and issues. As I write this I am reminded of how my early life and experiences guide so much of what I do today. I am a big fan for suggesting that we have as many “out of the box” experiences as we can.
- The most memorable view I’ve ever seen was in Peru, at Machu Picchu. I was there at 7 a.m. on my birthday one year. There was a light mist and rainbows, and it was spectacular. It is one of the places in the world that I think affects people on the spiritual level. It certainly did for me.
How has your life been affected by your early experiences? What experiences could you have in the future that might open your world view?

An Appeal from Salka
Posted by: | CommentsThis is a bit off-topic from my usual posts, but it’s important to me and Salka.
As you can see in this photo, Salka is perfectly comfortable in the lobby of a dog-friendly hotel. In fact, he often goes with me to several dog-friendly businesses. Due to changes in corporate policy, unfortunately, he is no longer welcome at some of the places we used to go. As a result, I may stop going to those places, and I know the same is true for others with companions like Salka.
Salka understands that the policies may have changed because some of his brethren are not well behaved. Nevertheless, he encourages pack leaders say something to these businesses, because there are many of us who make choices based upon such policies. In fact, Salka and I have already stopped going to a couple of banks specifically because of these policy changes.
If you are a pack leader with pull, please do what you can to encourage businesses to adopt or maintain dog-friendly policies as appropriate for their clientele. Salka and I appreciate your efforts.
Are there any experiences you’d like to share regarding a dog-friendly business?

Rubbing Elbows with the Rich and Famous
Posted by: | CommentsAt last! After spending the better part of a week traveling, I was finally able to successfully download my pictures from the recent Secret Millionaire party at James Malinchaks house in Las Vegas. This is one of my favorites, featuring (from left to right) James, myself and Robin Leach, who served as the MC for the event.
Is It Time to Work or Play (or Sleep)?
Posted by: | CommentsLike all dogs, Salka has sleep time, eating time and playtime. His energy level is at its highest early in the morning, and he makes the most of that.
We all have a time when we do things better. Take a cue from him and discover what your rhythm is for certain things. If you work best at 3:00 in the morning, don’t “weird out” about it. Work with it!

Meet Terry, Part 2
Posted by: | CommentsFor those of you who would like to know more about me, this is the continuation of last week’s post.
Did You Know…
1. That my son Phil is a musician in Berlin, Germany? He’s performing at a wedding in the photo below.
2. That my sister, Kathy, is head of the Peace Corps’ Spanish language program in Peru? She’s on the right in the photo below, with my dogs and her husband Leo. I’m on the left with granddaughter Gabriel.
3. That I love soccer. I play in a 45+ league now, and I used to serve as a color commentator for professional indoor soccer. That was a great opportunity for me to combine two passions: soccer and communication. I did this twice before the Spanish-language station, Telemundo, and the team, Arizona Sandsharks, were sold. As if commentating weren’t fun enough, I also got to do some warm-ups and passing drills with the team!
Meet Terry, Part 1
Posted by: | CommentsSomeone recently pointed out that I’ve shared more personal information in my newsletter than on this blog or website. I’ve taken the hint and decided to include some new pictures as well as clips from the “Did You Know?” and “Travels with Terry” sections of my ezine, Belief Change Alchemy. If you haven’t already, I invite you to subscribe to that now.
My wife Beth Haggerty and I live in Tucson, Arizona. In addition to Salka, whom you’ve already met, we are happy to share our lives with Munai (left) and Waiki (center).
As I mentioned earlier this month, one of my goals is to travel on all of the major rivers of the world. I’ve been on ten so far, including the Amazon (left), Rhine (middle) and Russian River (in Alaska, right).
